The Lords of Discipline - Life in a Military Academy Essay

The Lords of Discipline - Life in a Military Academy To the average person, school is a place to learn where one may speak their mind freely, yet stay orderly through a light set of values and order. In The Lords of Discipline, we learn of a different type of school. The Institute is a military academy with rigorous mental and physical standards, and very straight-forward and rigid policies. What is learned at the Institute is to stay loyal to your classmates. The upperclassmen do their best to keep this primary rule imbedded in the minds of the plebe’s. In this story, we learn about an open-minded student at the academy whose own pride and determination allows him to stay in the system and not give up. He disagrees with the ways†¦show more content†¦The order will always remain the same way, a cadet must comply obediently and without hesitation to commanding officers. For the main character in the story, Will McLean, this order defies everything that he knows is right in the world. Life is harsh for him, he came there an unconditioned young man like the others and was groomed by their system to somewhat fit their standards. For a cadet, any knowledge about respect and rights prior to the institute must be forgotten so that one may be remodeled. Another of the aspects that is key to life at the Institution is values. The values of the cadets at the Institution don’t really exist at times. The one that will always remain true is the honor to not shit on your classmates. Courage and bravery can put a person in the in crowd and failure to meet the standards will place you in the out crowd. Will has found himself in the middle of these groups. He is still in the school because he simply has done nothing wrong according to policy, but in his heart he does not wish to be known as an Institute man. Structure is important to most of the cadets at the Institute, even to Will it means something. The structure has Will in a love/hate relationship with the Institution. He sees the benefit of going through this system, but has absolute animosity and loathing for what it does to people. Technological changes- European and North American design standards relating to driving and new technologies to attain the aim of safer driving. However, Australia represents 1% worldwide sales of motorcycle and thus, cannot direct the development of future technology. In accordance with Zikmund and et.al. 2013, the main change in technology which has been observed in vehicle industry is that potentials are made more reliable on car and bike technology rather that own skills and awareness. Legal issues involved- Due to increase in significant no. of riders killed or injured seriously in crashes as it involvesrisk-taking behaviour; government is making rigid rules so that it can be reduced. Special license for recreating riding for juniors is also required. Further fully licensed riding will automatically illegal riding activities. Market size-As per the opinion of Park and et.al. The revenue relating to vehicle industry in $174 billion on an annual basis with a growth rate of -.2%; the figures relate to period between the year 2013 to 2018. The industry is having a significant market size. Competition Major competitors - Major competitions will be from the large-scale dealers who also provide such types of assistance services to their customers. The major competition will be from the Car City Company. This company is a renowned name in the areas of Sydney and Melbourne. The company deals in providing all the services related to buying and selling of second-hand Competitive strategies- The competitive strategies to be used while launching the new service in the Australian Market will be the strategy of cost focus strategy. This strategy is expected to satisfy enough consumers and gain popularity (Lawton and et.al. 2013). Market share- Market share will be primarily focused on youngsters living within a specific area of 20 km. The main approach to be followed for gaining that market share will be gaining the trust of prospective customers by planning an approach that creates a stake in their minds. The salesperson will be trained for this purpose so that they are able to attract the specified market share. Value Chain- value chain of the company closely related to the one provided by Porter. According to the views of Laszlo and et.al. (2017), in order to deliver quality service to the customers, it is important to maintain quality right from the source of origin. Thus, a lot of attention will be placed on gathering information related to the history of vehicles our client intends to buy. The work will be done with latest IT technologies, trained staff and some professionals of the field. Stakeholders involved- the company will work on adirect marketing basis, in which the customers will be contacted directly without any mediators. Thus, main stakeholders will be the employees who will be in a face to face interaction with the customers. Other major stakeholders will be the financial institutions and shareholders that will contribute to the financial structure of the company. As per the opinion of Johnson (2017), thegovernment will be in a way an indirect stakeholder, since any business works under the legislation provided by the authorities. Groups that have an influence on customers- According to the opinion of Huo and et.al., (2014), a major group that is likely to influence customers is the Government. Another powerful weapon that affects the consumers choice is the rate of inflation prevailing in the economy. The rate of interest on loans also affects the purchasing power. The monetary policy of the government decided the amount of cash at the discretion of public for the purchase of automobiles. Customers Needs and Preference- There are various factors which affect customers need and perception like the price and of the service. Price of substitute products also has a stake on shaping their need and perception. The government can affect the customers decision to a very large extent. Current primary and secondary target market- The size of the market will include a number of prospective buyers of the service. Determination of market size for this service will be entirely based upon market trends of the industry for second-hand automobiles. Trends- The national vehicle fleet has also grown to 2.1% and the same resulted in 18.4 million registered vehicles in the year 2016. All over it can be said that increasing trend exists in vehicle market which means that people are interested to change vehicle with change or innovation of new technology (Federal Chamber of Automotive Industry). Core Competencies and current revenues The core competency of the firm lays in its proposed plan. The idea of promoting this type of service is one of its kinds and is expected to gain momentum in short time. It is very little and no scope for competition in the near future. For, a rational man will always look forward to such service before investing in the automobile. Below are the expected profits of the firm for five years. Year Expected Profit in $ 2017 2,00,000 2018 2,00,000 2019 4,00,000 2020 4.50000 2021 2000000 Marketing mix to be used- product, place, price and physical distribution- The main service rendered by the company will be 360-degree assistance to the buyers of the second-hand automobiles including the registrations, history of the vehicles, the features and basic characteristics. It also includes insurance facilities. The main target market will be the adults of age between 18-35. The pricing strategy will be penetration pricing and the cost-plus pricing; in which the price will be kept lower in order to penetrate into the market. The physical distribution used will be direct selling. Positioning- Analysis of market plays a vital role in ascertaining whether we should move further with regard to the new and proposed service or not. The plan, if executed properly can bring great success to the firm. According to the views of Sekaran and et.al. 2016, a significant variation exists between on-road requirements and practical requirement for riding in a bush regarding a motorcycle. Expanded swot Strengths The major strength of the company includes the types of service which is to be provided. The company is ought to deliver all the service a buyer can consider before purchasing the vehicle. The most important are to deliver them with the details and history of the vehicle they intend to purchase. The exclusive service also includes making the insurance facility available to the clients. Weakness Not enough experience of the target market. Lack of competitive knowledge. Opportunity New and innovative idea of 360-degree assistance to the buyers of used car and two-wheelers. Threats The threatof major companies dealing in used automobiles starting the same service. Strategies to maximize strengths and opportunities Exercising total quality management so that the quality of the service remains at its best (Hair, 2015). Heavy promotional activity will be carried on so that the idea is propaganda reaches to every individual. Strategies to mitigate weaknesses and threats Gaining knowledge of the market thoroughly so that no unforeseen situations arise. Developing expertise to mitigate the competitive reaction from major players of used automobiles (Goetsch and et.al. 2013). Concept Generation Concept Rational Primary target market, features, benefits and positioning Our company is concentrated on a new service idea; which is relating to used cars and two-wheelers buyers.. The reason for the selection of this service is that the buyers of second-hand vehicles are very much concerned about the vehicle they intend to buy. They always want to receive the best value for their money. Thus, keeping this concern in mind, it is expected that the business will resolve this concern of the clients. The service will be provided to one and all. Moreover, a customer will be able to use the service prior to purchasing a used vehicle from anywhere in open market in the Australian market The following services will be provided by the new proposed venture: Approvals relating to roadworthy. Assistance relating to registration and transfers Facility relating pick and drop vehicles without transportation. A 3600on the vehicle in which the customer is interested The companies that deliver them the vehicles may not provide a genuine feedback on the vehicle. Thus they may consider a third party recommendation. For this, it is important to develop trust among their clients by providing exceptional services and developing word of mouth promotion (Goetsch and et.al., 2014). The rationale behind choosing this strategy is that if the cost of service is kept low then the firm will be able to grab a major market share in short time. The main concentration will be on specific market segments located near the firm and keep the low price in those segments. Project Evaluation and Testing The research methodology will include surveying primary and secondary sources. As per the words of Cravens and et.al. (2014), the primary source will involve aquestionnaire and personal interview form a sample of customers that are intending to buy second-hand vehicles. The method of forming sample will be simple random sampling. The questionnaire will include open-ended questions and some multiple choice questions which will be direct towards assessing their acceptance of our business proposal. The interview will include ascertaining whether or not the customers are satisfied with the present service being provided by various companies at present. Secondary sources will include research on the already published data on the market size and trends in the industry. Summary of findings It can be concluded from above assessment that in thepresent scenario, people want to remain updated with the technology. Thus, the people are acapablesell off the vehicles when anew model or advanced technology is introduced in the market. The new proposed venture relating to used cars is a brilliant concept as people are worried regarding the testing of old vehicles which they purchase from others. As the company will provide 3600which would provide them details relating to engine check, valuation check, maintenance history and all other required detail. Even special service relating to inspection is also provided after the payment has been made by theclient. Development and Strategy Soundness Evaluation According to the words of Cantallopsand et.al., (2014), perceptual mapping provide assistance to companies in understanding their behaviour i.e. assessment in detail of who, why, where and what of their behaviour. If one entity understands the concept and ascertains the reason behind unsatisfied customers than they can make changes for resolving the issues. Application: As per the words of Camisn and et.al., (2014), further another two important variants are pre-purchasing experience and post purchasing experience; through comparing both of the company will be able to ascertain to what extent they have succeeded in providing satisfactory to the customers. Loyalty programs and apointof regular service are the two plans which can be adopted by the company in order to keep the old customer and attract new clients. Feasibility Analysis Particular Description Technical viability According to the words of Block and et.al., (2015), it should be assessed whether the product or service which is being provided by the company is technically viable. Whether the service is in accordance with the existing technology and it not how much cost you will have to spend for acquiring the same. One should remember that customers get attracted with new and advanced technology in an easy manner; thus efforts should be made to be in line with it. Market Viability As per Armstrong and et.al. (2015), the group which is required to be targeted; needs to be assessed in detail manner. In the present case, the policies should be formed by considering them to attain the maximum benefit. Commercial Viability According to Andriesand et.al., 2016, this criterion refers to theassessment of key factors or variants which should be kept in view by a company in order to attain the key objectives of thebusiness. The main variant which is required to be assessed by aproposed venture is to ascertain how long they could survive before thefirst sale. Conclusion In the end, it can be concluded that no business venture can go in vain which is supported by a full-proof marketing plan. The report describes almost every detail that will be required for the implementation of aplan proposed. Target Market - As per the report, the product has enough potential to get momentum in the target market. Objectives and marketing Strategies Revenue and profitability- The fall in expected revenue in 2021 is due to rise in services of some kind. In 2019 and2020 the profits are expected to increase due to gaining maturity of the service in the market. For now, the revenues are expected to be minimal. Market share- A thorough analysis of the market is required which will reflect the trends and competitive strategies to be followed. Product- The proposed venture relating to service of used cars and two-wheelers will ascertain the factors for which customers are worried to a higher extent. It comprises a value of vehicles and reliability of its parts Place- there is no specified age group as most people of all age group drive vehicles; however, the main target is people having age between 20 - 40; Price- As the idea gains demand, people will switch to changing cars and prefer a higher version if available at nominal price along with adequate feature. Promotion- the Company is required to create AWARENESS of the service for the generation of profit. The TRIAL will be carried out by introducing the product to a small group of customers. AVAILABILITY of the service will be made as and when required by the client. Only then they will REPEAT their service with us. Implementation Plan- All the major stakeholders including government must be considered before planning any new strategy. The SWOT analysis reveals major issues of competitors which are to be focused the most. The core competency of the firm lays in its idea which has to be executed and implemented in the planned way. Thus, company will meet up the demand of customer and due to same significant chances exist that it will sustain in the market. The research conducted is also in favour of the company so it should move for next step that is its implementation. Contingency Plan- The plan must be supported by a concrete contingency plan so as to ensure that the efforts undertaken do not become futile. The contingency plan might include addition or deletion of some services which according to the profitability and loss entailed by them. The major technological changes in the design of hardware of the vehicles and the relevant legal issues have to be regularly checked for necessary amendments in the services. The competitive strategy of cost focus must be followed with great attention. References Andries, P. and Debackere, K., 2016. The Crucible Arthur Miller Essay Example

The Crucible Arthur Miller Essay However there are more then two sides to Proctor. He appears to be a character with a split personality. Whilst under the courts influence, Proctor is very polite towards Danforth; it is almost as if he is on his best behaviour. Though Danforth dismisses most of Proctors statements, Proctor does not react in the way he might have if it were another character. Proctor acting in Giles honour states, Forgive him sir, for his old age. Peace, Giles, well prove it all now. Although Danforth implies this is all a waste of time Proctor continues. Proctors response is not as objective as it would have been if it were someone else he was talking to. This is because Proctor has visible respect for Danforth and is aware that he is under his authority. When Danforth cuts off Proctors speech, he reacts calmly, whereas if this had happened under normal everyday circumstances, he may have objected to the fact that he was not allowed to finish his sentence. This shows that Proctor not only has respect for Danforth but also for the court, showing that he is in fact a decent man. Also during this trial scene, Parris endless attempts at blackening Proctors name to show the side of Proctor that he knows is pointless as Proctor remains civil and does not respond to him. Parris states in hope of an outrageous outburst, Hes come to overthrow this court, Your Honour! Proctor simply ignores this accusation and continues with what he has come to the court to do. Although ignoring Parris statement was probably hard Proctor managed to rise above his level. When Proctor makes his confession, Hale is surprised but still admires and believes in him. By my oath to heaven, I believe him now. Also Hale is strongly against Proctors execution and feels responsible because there is nothing he can do to stop it. Hale feels so strongly against the execution, that he feels himself to be Proctors murderer. I would save your husbands life for if he is taken I count myself his murderer. This conveys Hales opposition to the courts decisions. Parriss reaction is the complete opposite of Hales. Parris seems extremely pleased; it is as if justice has been done in his eyes. When accusations are made against Proctor, by Mary Warren (such as, Youre the Devils man. ) Parris calls out Praise God like it is something he had been trying to expose Proctor of since the beginning of the trial. Parris gives the impression of someone who has been trying to lead the town against Proctor and has now become successful. From these two very different reactions to Proctors confession it is clear that Proctors trial had more against him then for him. Hale who is an outsider had no successful input whereas Parris, who lives in the province and dislikes Proctor, is taken heed of. Through John Proctor, Arthur miller has portrayed a character that is strong willed, not afraid to do his own thing, and is extremely brave. This relates to Millers comments on individuality because to be your own person these are just a few personal traits you need to have. In this essay I have explained Proctors relationship with the two ministers Hale and Parris and their suspicions of Proctors faith. To do this I have explained the relationship he has with them and their reactions to his confession in court.

Free Essays on Foreign Policy And Violece

Most of the United States problems are now self induced due to its over involvement in foreign policy. Often the method of â€Å"keeping the peace† in an ally country is the use of military force. This excessive use of the military directly draws extra money from the tax payers pocket and puts our soldiers at risk just to make America look like the good guy. The United States (U.S) should become more neutral in world matters and only act when necessary because it will save the American people money, save American lives and The United States will not seem like an unfriendly giant always using its force to snuff others out. The United States spends about one billion dollars a day on the military. That adds up to a total of 365 billion dollars a year of tax payers’ money and the U.S has not been involved in a major war since the early nineties. So why is all of this money being spent on the military? It’s because The United States involves itself in the small skirmishes of its allies. For example, large amounts of artillery and thousands of troops each year attempt to keep peace between Iraq and Iran. Even though this is not a massive amount of U.S military force, the money being budgeted to pay the men and women who are there and the money spent on the weapons they use could be used to solve New Hampshire’s crisis of funding education. Although how tax payers’ money is spent it is not as important as the lives of the men and women who make up America’s armed forces and the civilians that they protect. Each year soldiers die away from American soil trying to aid its allies, usually for some type of self-benefit. Yes, these deaths are horrible, but they can be reconciled by saying that these men and women die honorably in the line of duty, fighting for his or her country. Writing Motivation How to Persevere in Writing When You Want to Give Up

Writing Motivation How to Persevere in Writing When You Want to Give Up Writing Motivation: How to Persevere in Writing When You Feel Like Giving Up Writing motivation is fickle. It comes and goes but the feeling of wanting to give up might linger even longer. So how do you persevere in writing if you feel like giving up?Contrary to popular belief, writers and authors dont just want to write all day every day. Maybe the very rare person does, but thats not the normAnd so writers must learn to reach beyond themselves and understand how to stay motivated to write and persevere until they finish writing a book, especially if you want to self-publish a book.Heres how to keep your writing motivation high:Learn how perseverance in writing worksForming a writing habitGather the right writing toolsIncrease writing motivation through dedicationKeep your writing datesKeep the document visibleDo writing sprintsConnect with other authorsBe kind to yourselfNOTE: If you want a system as well as an accountability resource to keep up your writing motivation, check out our VIP Self-Publishing Program where we do just that (with 1-on-1 coaching) an d much more. Learn more about it hereHow Perseverance Works, Even in WritingI’m going to start with showing you an image of my nine-year-old’s perseverance that can be applied to anyone.Every week she climbs a 16 ft rope at her gymnastics class. She decided that she was going to make it to the bell about 2 months ago and she has steadily climbed further up the rope each week. Her hands slide up the rope with precision, her knees are out like a butterfly and she uses her whole body to climb up the rope. Every week I shoot a Facebook live video of her.And every week the time it takes her to climb the rope decreases.Preserving in writing is a lot like my 9-year-olds determination to squirm her way up the rope.It is climbing, hand over hand, using all the resources you have to keep your eye on the finished target. In my daughters case, it is the bell at the top of the gymnastics rope. In my case, it is finishing my second book this year. When my family and friends ask me ab out my first book, how much time it took, and what keeps me going, I shrug and say, â€Å"I started working on it consistently in November.† I went from idea to self-published in 6 months. Of course, that was with intentional, uninterrupted writing times and the determination to keep going even when it was hard. You can write a book too. You just have to make the most of every second and continue on your journey, even when it is hard. How to Form a Writing Habit to Maintain Writing MotivationIt is not always easy to consistently write. In fact, there are days when it is downright HARD, but we all have the same 86,400 seconds in every single day.How we choose to use our time is one of the things that sets apart those who persevere in writing against those that don’t.  And forming a writing routine and habit is the best way to make that happen. I dont have a lot of time for writing during the day- so I have to create time. The absolute best time for me is to wake before the sun and spend the first two hours of my day writing and creating. I do find small chunks of time during a break at school to pull up the google doc app on my phone and write a few words. However, as you can see by Chandler’s video about burnout, it is super important to create hard and fast boundaries about your life and your writing routine, so that you don’t burnout and you’re able to continue writing.Gather the Writing Tools to Help Writing MotivationSometimes those boundaries include using the right tools for writing, which will also help you persevere and keep you motivated to keep going. The right tool or writing software is generally not your phone. That’s not to say that you can’t have your phone as an occasional tool; however, it is equally as important to understand that if you pull your computer out and go to your dedicated writing space, you will likely accomplish a lot more. There are different people and people who do things in di fferent ways. In the writing community, we call them plotters and pansters, or discovery writers. The plotters plan every single detail out and they are then able to compile their narratives. The pansters go with the flow and get things moving by simply putting one word in front of the other. Here are some of the best tools for writing:A word processing program (like Microsoft Word or Google Docs)A journalA blank piece of paperA notebookA pen/pencilA keyboardKeep in mind that the word processor you use can make a huge difference in writing motivation. For example, using something like Scrivener to track your word count and goal line can keep you pushing to reach the end.Check out our Scrivener Tutorial below if youre curious to learn more. Keep Writing Motivation Through DeterminationWhen I am most likely to want to throw in the towel, I usually get some inspiration from someone that I’ve allowed to read my work to help me keep going. If that’s not possible, I reach out to the #writingcommunity on Twitter and someone there will give me some sage advice- like go for a walk. So many writers dream of having the ability to work from home, never get dressed if they don’t have to, and being an authorpreneur. However, it takes a lot of perseverance to get there. It takes the dedication of finding the one time in your day to keep an appointment with the most important VIP in your life: yourself. How to Maintain Writing Motivation Even When it Gets ToughMy writing coach, R.E. Vance, told me that the worst thing I can do is not to look at my writing for a few days. He said that when you aren’t engaged with it, it takes longer to move to the creation part because you have to re-read, figure out where you are, and you lose momentum. So follow these steps for persevering in your writing journey every day.#1 Keep a Writing Date With YourselfYou are a very important person in this blank page to published process. So, find a time that works for you, w hether that is early in the morning or after your family is in bed for the night, and dedicate five, ten, twenty-five minutes, or an hour to working on your book.â€Å"But I am tired.†Guess what? You’re making the most of those 86,400 seconds in a day by finding a few minutes to commit to writing. Personally, I am a morning writer. I know that I am a lot less likely to be interrupted in the morning than at any other time.#2 Keep the Document Open and VisibleWhen you open your work in progress document, you’re setting yourself up for success. You know that you want to add more words to the page and you can do this by simply putting one word down and following it with the next. You can edit bad writing, but you can’t edit a blank page.Thats why keeping the doc open, no matter what writing software you use, can help keep it top of mind. Think of it like keeping a sticky note out reminding you.Whenever you log on to your computer, youll have a reminder to writ e right in front of you.#3 Do Writing SprintsFor those of you who dont know, writing sprints are when you set a timer and simply write as much as you can during that time. You dont go back and read, you dont edit, you just write and keep writing until the time is up.Set a timer for a few minutes. It can be one minute, it can be two minutes, or it can twenty minutes. You get to decide how many minutes you want for a sprint and then during that time period, you simply write. You write as many words as you can in that sprint and perhaps it will inspire you to do another sprint. If you want to have more accountability do this, hop on Twitter and search the hashtag #writingsprints to find people who are currently looking for sprinting buddies. This can help you stick with it and then be accountable for it at the same time, since many post their word counts after (usually followed by more sprints).#4 Connect With Other AuthorsSometimes we need a little motivation to keep us going. Most othe r authors are more than willing to help you when you’re feeling down.Reach out to the author communities on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. They often have advice for you, whether it is on their blogs or through direct messages. If youre not sure where to go to find other writers, here are some hashtags you can use to search and find people writing in your genre!PlatformHashtagsTwitter- #amwriting - #writerslife - #authorlife - #aspiringauthor - #writerproblems - #[yourgenre]writerInstagram- #amwriting (as in, "I am writing") - #writerslife - #fantasywriter, #scifiwriter, #contemporarywriter, etc. - #writerprobs, #writerproblems - #writersofig, #writersofinstagram, #writersofinstaFacebook- #amwriting (as in, "I am writing") - #writerslife - #fantasywriter, #scifiwriter, #contemporarywriter, etc. - #writerprobs, #writerproblems#5 Be Kind to YourselfThe research from writer Joseph Epstein says that more than 81% of Americans believe that they have a book in them, but very few will put n the work to do it.You, however, are doing it and this deserves recognition.Often times we get down on ourselves, but in these times, you need to remember to speak to yourself like you would a friend. When I talk to a friend about my writing, they give me kudos and credit for the things I am doing. You should speak to yourself as you would speak to a friend. Writing Motivation from other AuthorsAny author will tell you that there will be days that you simply do not want to write, but many have tricks to help overcome the writing void. Here are a few of my favorite blog posts on finding the perseverance in your writing routine:7 Common Writing Mistakes that Will Stop You Finishing Your BookHow to Write Every Day (and why you should)9 Steps to Set Writing Goals and Commit to Your Book Writing PlanJust Write Every Day Of Your Life How to develop a daily writing habit, and why you shouldMake Time for Writing: Create a Writing Schedule That Works for YouRemember that there will always be times that you lose writing motivation and struggle to produce excellent content, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t write.Even the best writers struggle. They keep moving forward, by putting one word in front of the other and finding writing motivation that works for them, and you can too.Persevere in Writing TODAYStep 1:Set aside some of those 86,400 seconds in your day today and take time to write. It can be for 60 seconds or 60 minutes, but by putting engaging with your writing today, you are making the choice to persevere.Step 2:Sign up for your FREE training. Ethical Issues in Healthcare Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Ethical Issues in Healthcare - Essay Example This essay examines some of the key ethical issues concerning contentious health services such as abortion, euthanasia and consent. In brief, the main body contains first paragraphs presenting the arguments in support of the hypothesis and the second against argument on the hypothesis. Our main hypothesis involves the argument for or against the contentious health issues such as abortion, consent or euthanasia. In the process, the essayist looks into the factors involved, the guidance for dealing with specified ethical issue, evaluation of euthanasia based on different moral and ethical arguments. Euthanasia refers to an instance where patients who have a terminal illnesses, such as cancer, HIV/AIDs or diabetes, may opt to propose be given some drugs for terminating life. A nurse or any medical practitioner usually facilitates this. First, it has been argued that people have a right to decide when they want to die and therefore nobody should prevent them from using euthanasia. Secondly, it was revealed that to deny people the right to live their lives as they wish implies that each individual does not know what his or her own rights is. This was based on the concept of individualism, a fundamental factor within a democratic based political theory. The theory reveals that individuals should be given rights to own their life and nobody should question them on how they are managing personal life just like assets. Another argument was that it is wrong to keep any person alive for longer period than they are meant to be.

Short Tandem Repeat (STR) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Short Tandem Repeat (STR) - Essay Example Because of their varying repeat lengths, STRs are characterized with large number of alleles, which in turn make them being highly variable between populations (Lee et al, 1994). In addition, these microsatellite sequences account approximately for 3 percent of the human genome and occur on average every 10,000 nucleotides (Collins et al, 2003). Finally, among other types of biological material, STRs are characterized with consistency and stability, which practically means that any cell contains the very same profile of SRTs. From the forensic perspective, it means that regardless of type of biological material obtained in the crime scene, appropriate STR profile proving source attribution can be conducted using any type of cell without compromising the result. From the practical perspective, STR profile constitutes simply a panel of numerical designations of each STR allele repeat number based on their electrophoretic sizing information. The electrophoretic mobility of DNA is inversely proportional to the length of the fragment; the longer allele with more repeats migrates slower than the shorter alleles containing fewer repeats. If a snapshot (electropherogram) is taken at a time point when two alleles of different lengths are electrophoretically migrating through a gel, the shorter allele will appear further from the origin than the longer allele. When looking at multiple alleles simultaneously, the STR electropherogram pattern (profile) of an individual is different from that of another individual whose alleles may be longer or shorter and hence assigned with different allele numbers. The variation in STR allele sizes results in distinctive DNA profiles with a uniqueness of 1 in a trillion using the 13 core STR loci in the FBI’s national database known as COmbined DNA Index System (CODIS). These 13 loci were chosen for their unique characteristics, such as number of alleles and repeat sequence, present in each one of them. Their adoption in the

War on Terrorism Essay Example for Free

War on Terrorism Essay During the year 1998, a group of American ‘neoconservatives’ openly wrote to President Clinton to attack Iraq. This group was known as the Committee for Peace and Security in the Gulf. They were in real sense calling for the Americans to form part of a proxy army of attack for Israel. The signatories included Paul Wolforitz, Richard Perle and Eliot Abrams among others. Of course Clinton resisted these ventures and instead indicated support for the Iraq Liberation Act providing $ 97 million for training and equipping Iraqi exile groups. Come 2000, this particular group went ahead to organize the think tank the Project for the New American Century con cofounded by the likes of Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Lewis Libby and Paul Wolforwitz (Flum, 2008). A Break with Previous United States Foreign and Defense Policy During this time, three think tanks which were pro-Israel were championing similar ideas: The Jewish Institute for national Security Affairs (JINSA), The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), as well as the Center for Security Policy (CSP). These neoconservatives formed an integral part of the Bush 2000 presidential campaign as foreign-policy advisors (Flum, 2008). At this point in time, these powerful personalities easily influenced Bush with the ideological obsessions they had. What can be said here is that the Operation Iraqi Freedom, a description given to the invasion and occupation of Iraq by the U. S and affiliates represents a new dimension with regards to post-conflict humanitarian action. This new approach integrates security, humanitarian response, reconstruction as well as governance under the umbrella of the Department of Defense. The war on terrorism represents a break with previous United States foreign and defense policy to the extent that the UN agencies and non governmental organizations which conventionally had coordinated and implemented humanitarian assistance as well as post conflict reconstruction activities, are now relegated only to playing supportive roles within efforts supervised from the Pentagon (Charny, 2003). Again the war on terrorism represents a break with previous United States foreign and defense policy to the extent that the Iraq war is perceived as an expression of a new national security policy of pre-emptive self defense by the Bush administration (Charny, 2003). In spite of this new perception, it has there seems to be no public discussion of the long-term implications of the new approach to humanitarian assistance and post-conflict reconstruction the administration has embraced. Still, this break with the previous U. S foreign and defense policy is evident in the way humanitarian assistance has been militarized, the military given political, diplomatic and humanitarian responsibilities as well as the fact that donor government and independent agency contributions have been minimized. It has been argued that it is unclear the extent to which these new approaches can be considered new U. S doctrines more so regarding humanitarian emergencies. A discussion concerning NGO’s with Joseph Collins, the assistant secretary of Defense and the person charged with running the pentagon’s Stability Office clearly suggests that at least in the meantime, the Department of Defense will lead humanitarian operations in emergencies surrounding the military. According to Dr. Collins, the taking over of the humanitarian and reconstruction activities in the post-conflict Iraq by the Pentagon is a reflection of the assessment of lessons learned from post-conflict reconstruction efforts (Charny, 2003). In the opinion of Dr Collins, there lacked a clear overall authority who could coordinate the diverse players like the government leaders, UN agencies and personnel, as well as the peacekeeping forces among others, thereby plaguing the efforts in Kosovo and Afghanistan. Following those events, the conclusion of the Pentagon was that there was a need for a single unit to command all the aspects of the post-conflict response, thus placing these activities in the hands of the Department of Defense (Charny, 2003). This is a further illustration of the way the war on terrorism represents a break with previous United States foreign and defense policy. Conclusion In the final analysis, all these attempts represent a radical shift in the multicultural character of post-conflict endeavors over the past years in areas like Cambodia, East Timor, Afghanistan and the Balkans. It therefore means that the war on terrorism represents a break with previous United States foreign and defense policy. It should be noted however that this approach has not yielded positive results in Iraq. The Pentagon’s Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance (ORHA) did not include the UN and the NGO’s during its pre-war planning. The overall implication for this has been the ORHA’s slowness in restoring basic services as well as its failure to establish a legitimate Iraqi authority to locally run the state (Charny, 2003). The Tragedy of Teenage Abortion :: Argumentative Persuasive Essay Examples

The Tragedy of Teenage Abortion In society today, teens are taught by the television and the media that pre-marital sex is not a bad thing. This problem is leading to many teenage pregnancies, that then lead to abortion. All over the world teens are faced with many challenges in their everyday lives. Sex is being portrayed as extremely appealing in the media, but what they don't show is the pregnancies and the unborn child that never asked to be created in the first place that is being discarded. Abortion is in no way acceptable, it is murder of an unborn child. Many doctors will say that abortion is not a bad thing, and it's not murder. They have argued that it is just an embryo, and is not yet a child. In the book The Terrible Choice: The Abortion Dilemma, Glanville Williams, a well-known English criminologist, was quoted saying abortion should be treated like a tonsillectomy. It's a minor operation to remove unwanted or harmful "tissue growth". Both tissues are alive, and contain material substances, chemical compounds, DNA and RNA molecules. They may vary a little, but they are mainly matter which is composed of cells which are composed of chemicals (1-2). The only difference between a tonsillectomy and an abortion is that the fetus can grow and develop into a human being much like ourselves. Joseph Farah wrote an article about abortion in The Human Life Review. In this, she quoted Steven Pinker, a professor of psychology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology saying, " Babies aren't really people, because they don't have an ability to reflect upon (themselves) as a continuous locus of consciousness, to form and savor plans for the future, to dread death and to express the choice not to die. And there's the rub: Our immature neonates don't posess these traits any more than mice do. Several moral philosophers have concluded that neonates are not persons, and thus neo-naticide should not be classified as murder" (no page). Farah's article also looks at Michael Tooley's, a philosophy professor at the University of Colorado, views. He thinks "there should be some period of time, such as a week after birth, as the interval during which infanticide will be permitted" (no page). More in this same school said that parents should be able to kill their children "up to the time the baby learns to use certain expressions" (no page).

Impact of Mental Health Disorders in Childhood and Adolescence

Among the stated objectives of the Healthy People 2010, a national, multi-stakeholder program that aims to improve the over-all health of the American people through health promotion and disease prevention is to expand treatment services for mental health disorders. In particular, the program is aimed at â€Å"increasing the proportion of children with mental health problems who receive treatment† by enhancing the support network of affected children and their families and improving their access to mental health and other social services. The inclusion of mental health disorders as a priority public health issue that needs to be addressed stems from the acknowledgement of the gravity of the social and economic costs of mental health problems to families and communities. More importantly, the inclusion of mental health as a national health priority reflects a significant shift in attitude in public health policy.Indeed, mental health disorders have affected a significant portion of the American population for a long time. Estimates from the United States Department of Health and Human Services reveal that mental health problems affect 20 percent of the population annually. Likewise, the risk of developing mental health disorders cuts across age, ethnicity, gender, education, and socio-economic status, making children almost as vulnerable as older people to mental health problems. It is estimated, for instance, that 20 percent of children and adolescents within the 9 to 17 age group are likely to exhibit symptoms of mental health disturbances such as major depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders; with 5 percent of the cases being severe and debilitating to children’s normal growth and development. (USDHHS (a), 2000)Clearly, the impact of mental health disorders on children and adolescents’ well-being is grave. Children and adolescents with mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders usually perform poorly in school and are more vulnera ble to alcohol and drug addiction. As in adults, mental health disorders also increase the risk of children and adolescents towards violent and aggressive behavior and suicide. In the 1999 alone, the suicide rate among children and adolescents was as high as 2.6 percent. (USDHHS (b), 2000)Unfortunately, mental health disorders have been poorly understood which usually deprives those affected of access to necessary treatment and services. It is worth noting, for instance, that only 27 percent of children and adolescents afflicted with mental health disorders avail of treatments, most of them receiving help mainly from in-school facilities and services. (USDHHS (b), 2000) Prevailing health policies have largely ignored the fact that mental health problems usually begin during childhood and adolescence and may have a lifelong impact on affected children. In the same manner, the public and social costs of mental health disorders have been largely ignored or underrecognized. On the other hand, mental health disorders have been shown to have a tremendous impact on public and private health spending, amounting to $69 Billion in diagnosis and treatment expenses. (USDHHS (b), 2000) Majority of these costs were shouldered by public funds while the remainder were paid for through private spending. The figures could be higher when the indirect costs of mental health illness on productivity, damages to property, criminal justice and litigation, and insurance claims are accounted for.Likewise, mental health disorders also place a tremendous strain on the economic lives of families and communities. A study done by Busch and Barry (2007) aimed at determining the impact of childhood mental disorders on the financial well-being of families with afflicted children reveals that the impaired functioning of children with mental disturbances affects parents’ work productivity and caring for or arranging for the care of the child often leads to lost family income in terms of lo st work hours. (p. 1090) The researchers contend that caring for children with mental health disorders are as costly as caring with children with other chronic illnesses. (p. 1088)Busch and Barry’s study was conducted by analyzing the responses of respondents to the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs (NS-CSHCN) to compare the effects of children’s mental health disorders on the family’s economy to the economic impact on the family of children requiring special health care needs. (p. 1089)To this end, the researchers utilized propensity-score matching and logistic regression in controlling for differences between children with mental health disorders and the general population sample. Results of study supported their contention that caring for children with mental health disorders was a cause of financial burden especially for those who were privately insured. (p. 1089) Results of the study also showed that caring for a child with mental h ealth disorder severely limited the labor-market participation of parents, increased the time they spent caring for or arranging for childcare, and consequently reduced the time parents spent on other activities. (p. 1091)Thus, the authors encourage the implementation of programs and policies aimed at supporting the families of children with mental health disorders to alleviate the adverse economic outcomes brought about by heavy costs incurred from intensive and extensive child care and treatment requirements. (p. 1095) Such programs could include the elimination of mental health restrictions in private insurance policies that prevent or reduce children’s access to mental health services and treatment that increases the risk of prolonged and degenerative disability. Another suggestion made by the authors is extending financial assistance to families caring for children with mental disorders that would help defray some of the costs involved in the medical care of such childre n. (p. 1094)It is clear that the social and economic impact of mental health disorders should be a great concern for the nursing community. Nurses, who are at the frontline of health service delivery, play an important role in health promotion and disease prevention. As a critical health workforce, nurses’ support in the implementation of mental health programs is crucial in meeting health objectives and achieving positive health outcomes. Nurses have the ability to contribute to the promotion of mental health through a renewed focus on patient-centered care that takes into account the holistic dimensions of health and places emphasis on early detection and diagnosis of mental health problems.Nurses are an important part of the support network of families and communities with respect to the provision of information and other forms of resources. Given that mental health disorders are preventable and treatable diseases, the ability of nurses to provide a timely referral for tre atment services and intervention for children and adolescents who exhibit the symptoms of mental, behavioral, and emotional disturbance would be a significant factor in improving the health and lives of children and adolescents. A significant improvement in the detection of mental health disorders, for instance, can be achieved with adequate attention on the part of nurses on the cognitive, emotional, and psychological aspects of their patients. Therefore, the nursing community, as an important part of the health workforce, must be conscious of the prevalence of mental health disorders and be sufficiently informed about their role in the prevention and treatment of these problems. This way, nurses will be able to provide the needed support to reduce the economic and social costs of mental health-related diseases. Nurses will also be fully prepared to meet the exacting challenge of improving the health and quality of life of the individuals they serve.Works Cited:Busch, Susan H. & Col leen L. Barry (2007). Role Model Essays

Role Model Essays Role Model Essay Role Model Essay Many of us have role models in our lives and to most people role models are athletes and movie stars, but to me a role model is much more. To me a role model is a person who has positively influenced someone in life, and is not a person filled with selfishness and greed. They help shape someone’s personality, and characteristics. They are people who someone can look up to for advice in a hard situation, and know that they will give those words of wisdom. They will never judge our past actions, instead only look to help because they really care. A role model is someone who we should never feel awkward talking to about our problems. A perfect role model for me is my mother. She is a wonderful human being. She’s smart, wise, ambitious, patient and such a loving person. There are no words that can describe my gratitude towards her, but through this essay I will describe some of her characteristics that makes her my role model. To begin with, I would like to describe my mom’s ambition. Life was not easy with her, my father died when my bother was six years old and I was two. She was a single mother of two children and the head of the family. She woke up every morning with the positive attitude, and a smile on her face, even when she did not feel like it. She was always searching for ways to improve her persona, and live a happier life. My mom has worked really hard to give my brother and I the lifestyle we had. For example on my birthday she saved money for a month to do my birthday party and, she never missed one. My mom’s ambition to succeed in life has allowed her to grow into a wonderful person full of kindness and knowledge. Ambition is a great virtue to have, and that is one reason why my mother is my role model. My mother is a hard worker, she never complains about her life also, she always gets what she wants. If I ever need my mom’s advice or help she will be always there for me even today. My mother is a wise, smart and educated person, she has not any masters degree and for me she’s an example of what intelligent person should be like. Sometimes she comes home tired from work, and she still makes time for her family. She makes sure that we have done our homework and is always making sure we have everything that we need. I learned from my mother that if I work hard, I will get what I want. She always advised my brother and I to go to school so that we may become professionals. She always reminds us about the importance of education and knowledge. She always said â€Å"you will not get anywhere without hard work†. For example, when I was six years old I told my mom that i hated school and wanted find a job and leave the school. My mom showed me a person who was cleaning streets, and a person who was rich. She said if you want to clean streets you don’t have to go to school, but if you want to be successful and have money go to school and work hard it no matter how smart you are, to be consistent and perseverant is your key. She has shown me to stand on my own two feet and not be dependent of anyone for the success or failure in my life. Next, my mother taught me to be a positive person, and to help people when they are in need, and of course to do good things in my life. When we help people we are doing a good thing, that’s how good, positive spirit comes and stays around us, and that how we always get good things back. This is a good luck that we make for ourselves. It’s a secret of life, which not everyone believes in or follows it. My mom always says â€Å"treat everyone the way you want to be treated†. She said: â€Å"the more you give, the more you get†. Believe in good things that can happen, forgive people if they hurt you and also forget if they did hurt you. For example, joy, health, money, relationships, love, happiness and everything we ever wanted, we can get it by believing in it, and of course we have to do something to get it. My mother is my pride! She fills my heart with all the joy and love. She said that being a parent is her passion and it filled her heart with so much joy. Aside from being an outstanding person, she is a wonderful cook. I loved to come home from school and smell the great food that she has prepared for the day. Cooking is one of the many things that she has taught me. She always says that it is important for women to know how to cook, because it will help me in life. All of these characteristics that my mother has taught me will help me in my life. Becoming a successful person is a tough thing to do. For example; it requires a lot of hard work and responsibility. Many people do not live this type of life; they would like to live because they are not responsible people. So in other words, life only requires a little bit of hard work and determination. In conclusion, my mother is the person who has impacted my life the most. She is the most important person in my life and I know that she will be always there for me with help, her love, and her care. She’s a wonderful person, she admires the beauty of life, and as a result she is always in a good mood. Now, like my mother, I’m a positive thinker, and I am a creative person who believes life is what you create it to be. I also know if I have o make any big decisions in my life, I can always ask my mom for advice because she has the wisdom and experience. I also know that she will tell me the truth even if it is not something that I want to hear, but she will tell me with kindness and without any judgment. My mother is my role model because she does so much for me; she gives me everything she has just to make my life easier. I love my mother and I am so thankful that she is the way she is. My mother is always there for me and I would do anything for her.

Keep your doing words doing - Emphasis

Keep your doing words doing Keep your doing words doing There are some words that just drag your writing down. Theyre heavy and dull,  and they have a nasty habit of lugging even more weight  in  with them. They make the person  reading your writing  work way too hard to understand your meaning. And,  the fact is, they  might not even bother.   The good news is that once you get used to recognising such words, you will be able to change them and quickly make your writing more clear, concise and direct. The doing word behind the thing What were talking about are nouns (things) that are sneakily hiding verbs (doing or being words, actions). For example, the noun discussion hides the verb (to) discuss. You can recognise a noun by the fact you put the, a or an in front of it (a discussion, for instance). These are called nominalisations. In fact, nominalisation is itself a nominalisation: to nominalise is to turn a verb or adjective into a noun. But dont worry too much about that. Watch the video to see what we mean: These nouns that hide verbs often end in -tion or -sion. Thats why we say you should shun the -tions. Its not the only ending (others include -ment, -age, -al and -ence). But its definitely something to look out for in your writing – especially if the -tion/-sion words start to pile up. Shun the -tions When you spot them, try to work out what verbs are hiding behind them. Then see if you can change your sentences to use the equivalent verbs instead. (For example, change We need a discussion to We need to discuss.) As youve seen, this will probably mean you can cut out other words too. Transform your writing in small, easy steps This video is an extract from online-learning programme, Emphasis 360, which is designed to transform your writing step by step, in practical, manageable, bite-sized lessons. You can access a full lesson from the course free of charge here.

Art history blog Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1

Art history blog - Assignment Example The fundamental difference between Pollock’s paintings and the traditional paintings is that unlike the traditional paintings, there is little respect of any boundaries in Pollock’s paintings. His paintings have the power to provide the audience with a way out of the materialistic world into a world which Pollock created using his exceptional sense of art. As Kaprow mentions in his article, Pollock’s art is unique in that it tends to break free of the constraints of the materialistic world in terms of looks, impulse and meanings, this feature of Pollock’s art adds many metaphysical and superficial properties to it. Kaprow puts a question in front of the audience that now that Pollock has died, it is for us to decide what do we do with the kind of art Pollock proposed. Kaprow himself offered two alternatives for this in the same article. The first one suggests that Pollock’s art be taken further. This can be achieved by varying his esthetic without g oing away from it. The second alternative suggests that the making of paintings according to the conventional concept of oval or rectangle painting be given

Case report (The subject of Strategic integration, Marketing) Essay

Nestle’s strategies to achieve this was supported by launching operational efficiency programs worldwide. Including these programs, Nestle’s most important milestone is GLOBE, a program which aims to integrate the widespread manufacturing, accounting and operational activities of business units worldwide is explained along with its applications on the company’s overall objective to achieve internal growth though companywide synergies and integrations. Nestle’s strategic marketing decisions of bringing products under a few strategic brands are also discussed in detail and its implications on the company’s expenditures and strategic long-term objectives are also explained. Besides this, all the challenges which were faced by Nestle in pursuing its strife for achieving internal growth are also discussed in de tail. How Nestle tackled them with its unique approach, are also discussed. Along with the challenges, how Nestle plans to survive in mature markets by incorporating innovation in a sustainable manner in its product and brand portfolio for long-term sustainability is also illuminated in detail. 2. Introduction When Brabeck took over in 1997 from his predecessor Maucher, Nestle had its presence in almost 19 food categories, predominantly in food, pet food, milk, coffee, confectionary, clinical nutrition etc. However, despite such massive growth initiatives taken by Maucher, Nestle lagged behind in some categories and it can be owing to bad investments which were made during Maucher’s period in office. Brabech’s focus on organic growth directed the company towards discontinuing allocation of resources towards unprofitable channels. (Maucher, 1994). Being one of the leading global food companies, Nestle has established its strategic brands in various segments throughout t he world as one of its effective initiatives to boost internal growth, also known as organic growth. Nestle’s CEO Helmet Maucher from 1982 till 1997 had led the corporation from being just a European based company with strong footing as a manufacturer of milk and coffee to being a comprehensive and diversified global corporation dealing in a wide range of food products. Maucher’s main strategy for growth was to rely heavily on external sources and inorganic growth channels. Conglomerate mergers and takeovers were the major focus of Nestle’s growth strategy during Maucher’s tenure as CEO of the company. This did steer the company towards being the global leader in the food and beverage industry however, this was being done at the expense of not saving money through those channels which otherwise could have done so by not investing in unprofitable mergers and acquisitions. Brabeck however, did realize this fact and was determined to steer Nestle towards a m ore internalized approach to growth, with which he believed that the company will save a lot more capital and the resources could then be channelized into more profitable ventures. Brabeck took some important steps to promote organic growth by launching various programs and campaigns followed by setting up of special Business Units with various objectives (Maucher, 1994, Bell et al, 2009). 3. Organic Growth Programs In order to make Nestle’s operational activity more efficient, Brabech had to make some

Analyze a passage - Essay Example The reasons provided to support the main idea do enough to justify the insights. Surely, when the element of voluntary action disappears and it becomes requisite for livelihood, it is an example of forceful subscription or attachment to any work. They are reasonable and relevant in that there is no choice that is left especially when the labourer depends on labour to sustenance. It is true to say that this case is prevalent in the world which makes just about anyone who works for a living an enslaved person. The passage is important in guiding the efforts of people and their attributes towards labour. It promotes acceptance since it addresses the fact that humans need to do what they do. It is somehow a natural order and something that ought to be embraced in the quest for survival. Generally, the passage communicates important information for any person who engages in an activity and is concerned about

Analysis of Apple and its marketing strategies

Analysis of Apple and its marketing strategies This report analyses information and facts on the apple iPad in relation to the product itself and the marketing strategies of Apple. It provides an over view of the product such as the brand, pricing and application. The report focus on the identification and development of the primary target markers to create a profile which will help explain the product life cycle of the iPad. In Australia both models of the iPad were released in May 28, 2010 this report will cover both of these. Apples iPad is already huge. In fact, after just its first quarter of sales, its already the companys third-biggest business segment. In the June quarter, the iPad business generated $2.2 billion of revenue for Apple. Thats more than Apples iPod business generated last quarter $1.5 billion. (Though the cheaper iPod obviously had larger unit sales.) And its almost half as big as Apples 26-year-old Mac business, which put in its best quarter ever at $4.4 billion. Very impressive. And the fact that the ipad and Mac can apparently coexist is especially good news for Apple. Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-ipad-ipod-mac-2010-7#ixzz0xOXGC2sE Frommer (2010, p.1 of 4) Introduction This report has been prepared to provide facts, details and information relating to the Apple iPad. The best way to experience the web, email, photo and video. Hands down. Apple (2010, p.1 of 7). This quote is taken from Apples website on the iPads features, it shows the way Apple has chosen to market and present the iPad as the one shop for an ever changing environment in which we are always on the move. 2.0 Overview 2.1 The Brand The growth of Apple around the world has led to expantial growth in sales of Apple products since the start of the company on April 1, 1976 .The Company was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, with Ronald selling his share in the company back to Jobs and Wozniak for $800 in 1977. From 1976 until 1982 Apple released three personal computers, these were all over priced and werent taken up by the market. Then Apple released its iMac along with its new g laptop range as Steve Jobs returned and we also saw an increase in 1996 of the share price to $24.19 followed by another substantial increase in 1998 with the release of the iMac, shares hit $41.00. 10 Jan 2006 15à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ³ Macbook Pro and iMac 28 Feb 2006 Mac mini 24 April 2006 17à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ³ Macbook Pro 13 May 2006 13à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ³ Macbook 7 Aug 2006 Mac Pro Below is the Apple Product Timeline (Wikipedia, 2010, p1) This timeline of Apple products is a list of all stand-alone Apple II, Macintosh, and other computers, as well as computer peripherals, expansion cards, software, ancillary products, and consumer electronics sold by Apple Inc. in order of introduction date ( Wikipedia, 2010, p1). 2.2 The iPad The Apple iPad was released on two different dates depending on the model you wanted: the Wi-Fi model (U.S.) April 3, 2010  (2010-04-03) and Wi-Fi + 3G Model (U.S.) April 30, 2010. Warren (2010, p.1 of 5) 2.3 The applications use in everyday life There has been a huge push in the applications available for the iPad with the main updates coming in games that rely on the motion senses in the iPad, social networking applications such as flip board and the last area is business applications such as filemaker. The games are one of the reason the iPad had been such a great success with the world market. This is because people are now looking for new ways to entertain themselves when they are moving around during their day whether this be on trains and buses or when they are waiting for events to start. The iPad is able to play games in high definitions this creates a better and sharper image for the user with games such as Real Racing HD and Touch grind HD. The social network craze has hit the western world with Flipboard, a so-called social magazine viewable on tablet computers that offers content drawn from online social networking sites.  The Apple iPad is said to be the ideal means of reading Flipboard.  McCue is said to wa nt to make technology simple and Flipboard does this for online social networking by making it more accessible. This app pulls links, photos and events directly for social network sites which puts every that people view and look for very day in one place making life simpler. The business side of the iPad is greatly increasing as well with apps like filemaker a Mac database manager. Michaels (2010) the CEO of Apple stated The iphone may fit in your pocket, and the iPad may not be much larger than a hardcover book, but FileMaker thinks it can fit an entire database application on each device.   This evolution of being able to access your data bases and edit it on the fly via 3g wireless connection has huge advantages such as increasing productivity, efficiency and effectiveness. Its easier to carry and offers longer battery life than most notebooks which allows it to work well with other apps like macpractice. Macpractice is a Mac package that has all the needed and extra features f or a doctors office. These are some of the reasons I believe that the iPad is slowly becoming a must have product in the 21st century. 3.0 Primary Product Markets 3.0 Product Markets The Apple iPad has come into the market as a niche product but all at a risk to one of Apples largest markets their laptops. This is because the iPad doesnt really seem to sit anywhere as it is not quite a smartphone and so far not your laptop. So what is the Apple iPad being marketed as , my understanding is that it is being marketed as a product to be used wirelessly for business needs to improve productivity and effectiveness or for personal needs such as having a common calendar or phonebook and step-by-step videos. 3.1 Demographic The Definition: a statistic characterizing human populations (or segments of human populations broken down by age or sex or income etc.) The demographic of the iPad is complicated because the people buying them are sometimes not the ones necessary using them. The typical person buying ipads are upper class men and women, can be people with one or more incomes and usually aged between 24-40 years old. The other variables such as family size, race, ethnicity and education do not matter with this product. This is because the main barrier stopping people from purchasing this product is the price. With iPod touch prices at A$289.00 for an 8gb and the cheapest macbook(laptop) coming in at A$1249.00 and a iphone 16GB is A$ 859.00 and the cheapest ipad is A$629 for a 16gb Wi-Fi model. This is why Apple released the ipad to be the in between for a iPod touch and macbook. 3.2 Geographic The Definition: study of the earths surface; includes peoples responses to topography and climate and soil and vegetation. The geographic of the iPad is very similar to most technological products with the main market sales being in capital cities with high population areas the highest users and purchases of iPads. Below is a table of shops that stock the sale of iPads in Perth. Shop Name Number of Stores Online store Apple Store 1 Yes Dick Smith 3 yes Next Byte 2 no ProByte 1 yes PRA Imaging 1 Yes T4 Technology 1 No MAXstyle 1 Yes David Jones 1 No Jb Hi-Fi 10 Yes Mac Worx Joondalup 1 No Winthrop UWA 1 No XCITELOGIC PTY LTD 1 No Domayne 1 No Myer 1 No total 26 3.3 Psychographic The Definition: any attributes relating to personality, values, attitudes, interests, or lifestyles. There is definitely a high psychographic variable involved in the purchase of an iPad, this comes mainly from lifestyle and motives being the biggest push for people to want to purchase this product. Apple focuss a lot of time and resources into making the iPad seem like it is a need rather than a want, with many online advertising campaigns and TV adverts. These all help to create the need for the iPad and appeal to the personal attributes of the customers. An example of this type of advertising is the Apple iPad Commercial TV Ad (Official) HD on YouTube listed below: 3.4 Behaviouristic The Definition: an approach to psychology focusing on behaviour, denying any independent significance for mind and assuming that behaviour is determined by the environment. The behaviouristic variables of the iPad are the pricing sensitivity, brand loyalty and benefit expectations, these are key in how the iPad has been able to reach such high sales targets. Buskirk E (2010) One million ipads in 28 days thats less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iphone, said Apple CEO Steve Jobs This quote from Steve Jobs show just how explosive the launch of the iPad was, most of these sales were by Apple addicts. These are people who compulsory buy Apple products and have very high brand loyalty with very little price sensitivity and high benefit expectations of achieving a new or high social status by owning the newest Apple gadget .The next lot of buyers in the months after have higher benefit expectations these people that believe they will be given a social status or hierarchy by owning an iPad. 4.0 Product life cycle (PLC) There are five distinct stages in the product life cycle: product development, introduction, growth, maturity and decline. This model is used to show the sale and profit stages or patterns in a products life cycle from finish to end. 4.1 Product Development This is when the company starts to develop and work on a new product idea or range; during this stage sales are zero with the company having to invest all the capital behind the product. During this stage of the product I would keep the product idea/range a secret because of how many other companies are looking to enter the market and with the Amazon kindle and Tablet pcs already having been released the iPad would need to be kept under wraps. 4.2 Introduction As a new product much time will be spent by the organisation to create awareness of it presence amongst its target market. Profits are negative or low because of this reason. My understanding is that the iPad skipped this stage because of Apples already large dedicated customer base and with the combination of Apples marketing strategies which they do very well. 4.3 Growth If consumers clearly feel that this product will benefit them in some way and they accept it, the organisation will see a period of rapid sales growth. This I believe is currently where the iPad is now with sales slowing down from the introduction phase but still rising and new features in terms of software updates such as reduced cost of games and applications through the introduction of iADs an advertising platform built into the ios 4 this is the operating system that the iPad currently runs on. At this stage you would want to keep up your marketing strategies and start to lower prices as at the start Apple used a price skimming technique because it was a monopoly market but as competitors enter the market this will push out and slow down the entrance of competition. 4.4 Maturity Rapid sales growth cannot last forever. Sales slow down as the product sales reaches its peak as it has been accepted by most buyers. At this stage you want to be using product mix pricing strategies, this will most likely be in the form of product line pricing, by releasing a new and updated version of the iPad or by optional product/service pricing. In Apples case this would be extended Apple care warranty or by combining the sale of the iPad with other Apple products to compliment the use of the iPad just as Apple wireless router the air port extreme. 4.5 Decline Sales and profits start to decline, the organisation may try to change their pricing strategy to stimulate growth however the product will either have to be re-modified, or replaced within the market. Conclusion
